Atlantic Packaging is a privately held business starting over 75 years ago as a small-town newspaper in Tabor City, North Carolina. Over the years, they have become the leader in industrial packaging and customized converted products, specializing in end-of-line packaging systems. The company now expands to 35 locations throughout the United States and the Caribbean.
Project Award
Through an excellent referral from B&E Electrical and K-Con’s experience with design-build, Atlantic Packaging selected K-Con as the general contractor for their upcoming project. The project consisted of a 51,760-square-foot design-build pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) expansion to an existing warehouse.
Design-Build Process
Design-Build facilitates a true team approach to final design and construction by closely integrating input from the end user, builders, and designer at the onset and during all project phases. The design-build process promotes close communications and a partnership between the owner, builder, and designer, thus avoiding conflicts. Precise, up-front design definition with the consensus of all team members virtually eliminates costly change orders and modifications during construction.
K-Con is involved in all aspects of a project from start to finish, with a single-point responsibility. Concurrent activities and construction on initial phases can begin while final designs and finish decisions continue without delay. Our 30 years of experience have taught us that design-build requires timely and effective communication with all partners involved in a project. Project Highlights
Our team began the project with ground-up construction with slab-on-grade and a pre-engineered metal building. The fully insulated warehouse expansion included a two-story panelized in-plant office with restrooms and a sprinkler system. In addition, the project included a two-bay truck loading dock, a door with a forklift ramp, overhead doors with canopies, and overhead dock doors. Additionally, the project included electrical, mechanical, and plumbing. On the exterior of the building, the team completed sidewalks and landscaping, asphalt paving, and storm drainage. Concurrently, our team and subcontractors constructed the project without interrupting the client’s ongoing manufacturing and distribution operations.
